Our Vintage sparkling wine (Blanc de Blancs) is made from only Chardonnay grapes using the traditional method. The current vintages have had extensive time on lees to develop yeasty characteristics and rich citrus flavours. These wines have fine persistent bubbles and should be enjoyed at every opportunity or occasions large and small; happy and sad.

This vintage is named “Iola” to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Lyn's mother, Iola Miles, who was born in 1909.

“Viridian Wines 2009 Iola Late Disgorged Blanc de Blancs is a triumph.“ – Katie Spain, Good Food Magazine, 27 February 2023

The 2009 season was drier and slightly warmer than average, but with frosts early in the season. Overall this resulted in a reduced volume but high quality grapes. Our whites are slightly more acidic, with less alcohol. The first tranche of this sparkling Blanc de Blancs was late disgorged in mid-2022 after 13 years on lees. It is proving to be a worthy successor to the 2008 vintage.

This wine pairs beautifully with oysters, lobster, pate, and creamy desserts, where the acid balances out sweetness.

More about this wine

2009 season

In Spring there were two late frosts that impacted vineyards in the region - in late October and early November. Because of our location, on north facing slopes adjacent to the Derwent River, we were almost totally free from frost damage. Summer temperatures were about average except for exceptionally hot days at the end of January where the temperature was close to 40C for two days running. Overall the average temperatures were slightly above the long term average.
Spring was wetter than last year, however summer was drier, with no significant rain until mid-March. Autumn was wetter than average.
The Chardonnay was picked on 18 March for sparkling, the Riesling on 2 April and the Pinot noir on 13 April.

Preservative and allergen information

We use a small amount of sulphur-based preservative (224) in all of our wines and Verjuice to stabilise the wine and ensure a long life.

All of our still wines are packaged on a bottling line that may have traces of nut products. We do not use any nuts as part of our production process.

Our white wines may contain traces of dairy products (skim milk) remaining in the wine after the fining and filtration process.

Our red wines are vegan-friendly wines, as we do not use any animal products in their production.

Packaging and recycling information

Our sparkling wine is labelled with recyclable waterproof labels (designed to remain intact in ice buckets!) and biodegradable inks. The cap, cage (muselet), foil and glass bottle are fully recyclable.

Our natural cork stopper can be composted at home or via compost collection, or recycled through ReCork (available at select Dan Murphy’s stores across Australia).

All of our still wines are labelled with compostable paper-based labels for each varietal and a handwritten year; this allows us to eliminate duplication of labels for different vintages. The screw cap and glass bottle are fully recyclable.

We ship all of our wine using recycled cardboard packaging. Sparkling wine is packaged during bottling; still wine is packaged during order processing. You may receive different packages depending on availability. We reuse boxes from tasting events and within our storage facility.
